BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Following a career night in the University of Alabama’s loss to third-ranked LSU in Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday, Crimson Tide sophomore return man Javier Arenas has been named as the Southeastern Conference’s Special Teams Player of the Week, the league office announced.
Arenas, a defensive back from Tampa, Fla., had a huge night against the Tigers. He had 237 all-purpose yards in the game, easily a career high. Arenas had eight kickoff returns for 168 yards on the night, including a long of 31 yards.
It was as a punt returner that Arenas had the biggest impact. He had three punt returns for a total of 69 yards in the game, including an electrifying 61-yard touchdown run that gave Alabama a seven-point lead late in the fourth quarter.
The sophomore currently ranks sixth nationally and is second in the SEC in punt return average (17.2 yards) and leads the league in total punt return yards (326) on the season.
Arenas also started the game as one of the Tide’s defensive backs and played extensively in the Alabama secondary in the game. He tallied four tackles, including one for loss, and added a pass breakup on the night.
The Tide faces Mississippi State on Saturday in Starkville, Miss. The game is set to kickoff at 11:30 a.m. (CST) and can be seen on the Lincoln Financial Sports Network throughout the region.
