The University of Alabama football coaching staff recognized six players on Monday as the team’s Players of the Week following the Crimson Tide’s homecoming victory over Houston on Saturday. Two players from both the offensive and defensive units, as well as a two players from special teams, were selected.

On offense, tailback Glen Coffee earned the nod after logging his first career start in the Tide backfield. Coffee shouldered the majority of the work for Alabama, logging 30 carries for 121 yards, his first career 100-yard game. The sophomore from Fort Walton Beach, Fla., also led the Tide in receptions with six and was second on the team with 30 receiving yards.

Leading the way for Coffee was tackle Andre Smith, who was the second offensive player selected by the Tide coaching staff. Smith, a sophomore from Birmingham, helped pave the way for the Alabama offense that ran for 190 yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns on the afternoon. The Tide line gave up only one sack on Saturday while helping quarterback John Parker Wilson throw a pair of touchdown passes.

The defense was led by senior Wallace Gilberry, who earned player of the week accolades after a dominating performance on the defensive line. Gilberry racked up 11 tackles, including nine solo stops against Houston. The Bay Minette, Ala., native added two sacks (one for a safety), 4.5 tackles for loss and a pair of quarterback hurries to his line while helping the Tide hold the Cougars to seven first-half points.

Rashad Johnson, a junior safety from Sulligent, Ala., was the second defensive honoree. Johnson had nine tackles from the UA secondary, including five solo stops. His fourth-quarter interception and subsequent 28-yard return of a Case Keenum pass was one of the turning points in the game. Johnson also recorded one pass breakup on the afternoon.

On special teams, the coaching staff selected sophomore defensive back Chris Rogers and redshirt freshman Charlie Higgenbotham as players of the week. Rogers, from Lakeland, Fla., who earned the honor for the second straight week, had a tackle inside the 20-yard line on the kickoff team. Higgenbotham recorded a tackle on special teams as well.

The Tide returns to Southeastern Conference action this Saturday, Oct. 13, when Alabama travels to Oxford, Miss., to face the Ole Miss Rebels. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:34 a.m. (CDT) from Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
