The Duke Game - Saturday, October 7, 2006 - Bryant-Denny Stadium

PREGAME NOTES:  The Alabama captains for the Duke game were sophomore quarterback John Parker Wilson (Hoover), senior defensive lineman Jeremy Clark (Daphne) and senior defensive back Bryan Kilpatrick (Monroeville) ... Knute Rockne Christian delivered the game ball prior to tonight’s game ... A native of Tuscaloosa, Christian was the center for the Crimson Tide in 1954 and 1955 ... Duke won the toss and deferred to the second half ... Shaun Alexander (1996-99), the 2005 NFL Most Valuable Player, was introduced to the crowd at the end of the first quarter ... Alexander is the Crimson Tide’s all-time rushing leader with 3,565 yards ... He set an NFL record with 28 touchdowns last year for the Seattle Seahawks ... DeMeco Ryans (2002-05), the 2005 SEC Defensive Player of the Year and Lott Trophy winner, was recognized on the field at the end of the third quarter ... Ryans is a rookie linebacker this season with the Houston Texans ...

STARTING LINEUPS:  Alabama used the same starting lineup on offense for the fourth consecutive game ... The Crimson Tide   defense opened the game with four lineman for only the second time this season ... Senior Dominic Lee (Birmingham) made his second start of the season and second of his career at one defensive tackle spot ... Lee also started the Louisiana Monroe game at defensive tackle ... Redshirt freshman Prince Hall (Moreno Valley, Calif.) made his second start of the season at middle linebacker ... Hall also started at middle linebacker against Vanderbilt ... Alabama dressed 108 players for the Duke game ...

BRYANT’S 315 TEAM HONORED:  The 1981 Alabama Crimson Tide football team was honored at halftime ... The 2006 season marks the 25th anniversary of Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant’s historic 315th career win ... Alabama defeated Auburn 28-17 on Nov. 28, 1981, as Bryant surpassed Amos Alonzo Stagg as college football’s all-time winningest coach ... The 1981 team posted a 9-2-1 record and captured the school’s 18th SEC Championship ... There were 67 members of the 1981 team in attendance at tonight’s game ...

BACK-TO-BACK SCORES:  Sophomore running back Jimmy Johns (Brookhaven, Miss.) and sophomore defensive back Lionel Mitchell (Stone Mountain, Ga.) scored their first career touchdowns on back-to-back plays from scrimmage in the fourth quarter ... Johns’ scored his first collegiate touchdown with a two-yard run with 4:08 left in the game to give Alabama a 23-14 lead ... On Duke’s next play from scrimmage, Mitchell picked off an errant pass (tipped by Simeon Castille - Birmingham) and recorded his first collegiate touchdown with a 50-yard interception return to give the Crimson Tide a 30-14 lead with 3:33 left in the game ... Mitchell has two interceptions this season for 101 return yards ... He had a 51-yard interception return in the overtime loss to Arkansas on Sept. 23rd ...

TURNOVERS:  Alabama forced three turnovers in the win over Duke, giving the Crimson Tide 17 forced turnovers (2.83 per game) in six games this season ... The Crimson Tide defense has 10 interceptions and seven fumbles recovered this year ... Alabama has now forced at least one turnover in 37 of 43 games under coach Mike Shula, including all six games this season ... Castille recovered a fumble in the end zone and recorded a six-yard return to thwart a Duke scoring drive in the first quarter ... It was Castille’s second career fumble recovery and second of the 2006 season ... Senior defensive back Ramzee Robinson (Huntsville) recorded his first interception of the season when he recorded a two-yard interception return on Duke’s first possession of the third quarter ... Robinson now has two career interceptions for the Tide ... Mitchell added his second interception of the season in the fourth quarter ...

DEFENSE SCORES, AGAIN:  The Alabama defense has scored in three games this season, including back-to-back games against Florida and Duke ... Both defensive touchdowns were 50-yard returns ... Mitchell recorded his first collegiate touchdown with a 50-yard interception return in tonight’s win over Duke ... Prince Hall had a 50-yard fumble return for a touchdown against Florida on Sept. 30th ... Alabama also added a safety in its season opening win over Hawai’i on Sept. 2nd ... The Alabama defense has accounted for nine scores in the Mike Shula era, including five touchdowns and four safeties ...

HALL GOES FOR 100 AGAIN:  Junior wide receiver DJ Hall (Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.) recorded his third consecutive 100-yard receiving game with seven catches for 124 yards and one touchdown in the win over Duke ... He has 19 catches for 385 yards and two touchdowns in those three games ... Hall has averaged 20.3 yards per catch and 128.3 yards per game over the last three games ... The Duke game marked his sixth career 100-yard receiving game ... Alabama is 6-0 in those games ...

JOHN PARKER WILSON:  Sophomore quarterback John Parker Wilson completed 18 of 30 passes for 220 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception in the win over Duke ... Wilson is 4-2 as the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback this season ... In six games, Wilson has completed 102 of 169 passes (60.3 percent) for 1,373 yards, with nine touchdowns and five interceptions ...

KENNETH DARBY:  The senior from Huntsville recorded his first 100-yard game of the season against Duke ... Darby had 18 rushing attempts for 115 yards, with a long of 20 yards in the fourth quarter ... The Duke game was Darby’s 11th career 100-yard rushing game, moving him into fourth place on the school’s all-time list for most career 100-yard games ... In addition, Alabama is 9-2 in games in which Darby rushes for 100 or more yards ... For the season, Darby has 109 rushing attempts for 424 yards ... In 40 career games, Darby has 601 rushing attempts for 2,913 yards ... He is the school’s third all-time leading rusher ... Darby is also the fourth player in Alabama annals to record 600 or more career rushing attempts ...

ALABAMA NOTEBOOK:  Alabama snaps a two-game losing streak and improves to 4-2 on the season with a 30-14 win over Duke ... Alabama has won all four home games this season ... The Crimson Tide scored on its opening possession of both halves against the Blue Devils ... Bama scored on its first possession of the game when junior place kicker Jamie Christensen’s (Norcross, Ga.) 37-yard field goal gave the Crimson Tide a 3-0 lead with 10:39 left in the first quarter ... It marked the second time this season that Alabama has scored on its first possession of the first quarter ... Alabama also scored on its first drive of the game against Hawai’i in the season opener ... Alabama scored on its first drive of the third quarter when Wilson fired a nine-yard TD pass to Keith Brown (Pensacola, Fla.) to give the Crimson Tide a 16-14 lead ... The Crimson Tide has scored on its first possession of the third quarter in four of six games this season, including all four home games ... Duke took a 7-3 lead with 12:21 left in the second quarter when Thaddeus Lewis completed a nine-yard touchdown pass to Eron Riley ... Alabama has now trailed in five of six games this season ... The only time Alabama did not trail came in its 41-7 win over Louisiana Monroe on Sept. 16th ... Alabama recorded its second 90-plus yard scoring drive of the season in the second quarter ... Wilson’s four-yard pass to Hall capped the 11-play, 90-yard drive that took 6:48 off the clock ... The scoring drive just missed the longest of the season in terms of time of possession ... Bama had a 6:54 scoring drive earlier this year at Arkansas ... Alabama trailed 14-10 at halftime against Duke, marking just the second time this season the Crimson Tide has trailed at halftime ... Alabama also trailed at halftime in its 13-10 win over Vanderbilt on Sept. 9th ... Duke defensive tackle Casey Camero blocked Christensen’s extra point attempt in the third quarter, marking the first time since 2003 that Alabama had an extra point attempt blocked ... South Florida, Northern Illinois and Ole Miss all recorded blocked extra point attempts against Brian Bostick during the 2003 season ... Duke managed just 74 passing yards (7 of 18, 2 interceptions) in the loss to Alabama ... The Crimson Tide has held five of its first six opponents to less than 200 yards passing this season, including three opponents (Louisiana Monroe, Arkansas and Duke) to less than 100 yards ... Duke ran for 201 yards (41 rushing attempts) in the loss to Alabama to become the first team to rush for 200 yards against the Crimson Tide this season ... The last non-conference team to rush for 200 yards against Alabama was Minnesota (276) in the 2004 Music City Bowl ... Sophomore punter P.J. Fitzgerald (Coral Springs, Fla.) had his best day of the season with 40.2 yard average against Duke ... He had five punts, including a long of 51 yards in the win ...
