Florida State Game Week: Alabama Football Player Quotes

Florida State Game Week Press Conference
September 24, 2007

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ?? The University of Alabama football team held its weekly media day on Monday in preparation for Saturday’s game against Florida State in Jacksonville, Fla.  Several Crimson Tide players addressed the media in the Naylor Stone Media Suite about the FSU game.

Junior center Antoine Caldwell:

Preparing for FSU defense
“Their defensive line is probably one of the strongest parts of their football team. We definitely have to come in, be focused and have one of the best weeks of practice we have had.  It’s going to be a great challenge for us. I think that this loss we are getting over will help us prepare harder this week in practice and be more prepared for this football game. Florida State is a great football team, especially defensively, so it will be a good challenge and we will be ready on Saturday.”

On Georgia performance
“I thought we did some good things up front. We rushed for well over 100 yards, and we did a pretty good job in protection. I felt like it was just one of those weird games where the yardage you put out doesn’t reflect the scoreboard.”

Wallace Gilberry:

On experience of neutral site game against nationally prominent program
“It is going to be a wonderful experience. I personally feel like it is going to be like a home game for us because I know how well our fans travel and support us. The national publicity is going to be great, but that can’t distract us from the task at hand, which is to go out and dominate. We have to do a good job in practice and film study and correct the mistakes we’ve made in the past two games, especially against the running game.”

On Darren Mustin
“It was detrimental last week not having him. He knows his assignments and he knows how to makes plays. Once we get him back in the rotation and get him healthy I believe that the defense will have a different look. He is definitely a guy who has turned into a leader for us. He has great energy and when he gets on the football field, it’s just electric.”

Redshirt freshman running back Terry Grant:

On playing FSU
“I liked Florida State growing up and was pretty close to going there out of high school. They were in my top 3. It’s going to be really exciting to get a chance to play against them. Coach Mickey Andrews, their defensive coordinator, recruited me a lot and now he is going to have to game plan for me. We have a lot of talented backs with Glen (Coffee) and Roy (Upchurch) and that definitely helps me and all of us stay fresh during the game.”

Junior defensive back Rashad Johnson:

On Florida State
“It is exciting to play against a school like Florida State. They are always a great team. For us to play them and for me to have the opportunity to play against them is something I look forward to and cannot wait for. They will be a very fast and athletic team. They have some great athletes.”

On having today off from practice
“This is something that Coach Saban had planned. He told us on Friday that we would get today off, so last week’s game did not have an impact on that decision. Everyone needs a little break every now and then. We go at it so hard for such a long period of time; your body can use the break. You are also able to clear your head a little bit as well.”

Sophomore left tackle Andre Smith:

On Playing Florida State:
“I am really looking forward to going out and competing against Florida State. I’ve never been to Jacksonville, so it will be fun to have opportunity to go down and compete in Florida. It will definitely be exciting.”

On protection against Georgia
“We did pretty well against Georgia, but as an offensive line you’re going to make mistakes. It is up to us now to go out and work on those mistakes in practice to make sure they don’t happen again. We are going to continue to go out there and work hard, have fun, listen to Coach Saban and do what we are supposed to do.”
