SERIES NOTES: Alabama vs. Western Kentucky

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama and Western Kentucky will meet for the first time this weekend in Tuscaloosa. Here are some notes pertaining to the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

WESTERN KENTUCKY SERIES: Saturday will be the first meeting between Alabama and Sun Belt Conference member Western Kentucky.  The Crimson Tide owns a 15-1 record against members of the Sun Belt Conference. Western Kentucky is the first of two games against Sun Belt opponents for Alabama this season. Arkansas State visits Bryant-Denny Stadium on Nov. 1.

ALABAMA-WESTERN KENTUCKY TIES: WKU assistant head coach, passing game coordinator and receivers coach T.J. Weist was a receiver at Alabama from 1984-87. He earned one varsity letter (1987) and was a member of three bowl teams. He earned his bachelor’s degree in health and physical education in 1988, and then added an exercise physiology master’s degree one year later. He was also a graduate assistant under Bill Curry in 1988-89. Weist is the third former Tide player/coach to work against Alabama this season, joining Tommy Bowden (Clemson) and Dabo Swinney (Clemson).

ALABAMA VS. SUN BELT CONFERENCE: The Crimson Tide owns a 15-1 record against Sun Belt Conference teams. Western Kentucky is a provisional member of the Sun Belt this season, playing five conference football games before joining the league on a full-time basis next season. The game is the first of two meetings between UA and SBC teams this season. Alabama also plays Arkansas State on Saturday, Nov. 1 at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The Arkansas State game will be the Tide’s homecoming game in 2008. Alabama has played at least one game against five of the nine SBC members. The Crimson Tide owns an 8-0 record against Louisiana-Lafayette (formerly Southwestern Louisiana) and 2-0 marks against Middle Tennessee and North Texas. Alabama also has one win against both Arkansas State and Florida International. Alabama owns a 1-1 record against Louisiana-Monroe. The Tide has never faced Florida Atlantic or Troy.

WKU VS. SEC: Western Kentucky is 0-11 all-time against SEC teams. The record includes five losses to Vanderbilt, two losses to Mississippi and Auburn and one loss to both Florida and Georgia. Western Kentucky has never faced Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi State, South Carolina or Tennessee.

SABAN VS. SUN BELT CONFERENCE: Coach Saban is 4-1 in his career against Sun Belt Conference teams, including a 4-0 mark while the head coach at LSU. He is 1-0 in his career against Louisiana-Lafayette, Arkansas State and Troy and owns a 1-1 mark against Louisiana-Monroe. The Warhawks beat the Crimson Tide 21-14 last year in Tuscaloosa. Saban has never faced Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Middle Tennessee, North Texas or Western Kentucky in his career.
