TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- Alabama linebacker DeMeco Ryans has been named to the 2005 Lott Trophy Watch List, it was announced today. He is one of 42 top defensive players in the nation on the list.
Named after Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott, The Trophy goes to the college defensive player of the year who has the biggest IMPACT both on and off the field.
This marks the second year in a row that Ryans has made the Lott Watch List. Ryans heads into his senior season with an impressive resume. He is on track to graduate in December after just seven semesters and just last week he was named a 2005 Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sports Scholar. He has been a three-year Academic All-SEC selection and is 15th on the Tide's career tackle chart with 231 tackles. By season's end, he could become just the 5th Alabama player to amass 300 or more career tackles. He also holds the Alabama single game tackle record with 25 against Arkansas in 2003. Georgia's David Pollack won the inaugural award last year.
Sponsored by the IMPACT Foundation of The Pacific Club, the award is given to a player who exhibits the same characteristics that Lott embodied during his distinguished career: Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity. It is the only college award that is based on both performance and character.
The second annual Lott Trophy Banquet will be held on Dec. 11, 2005 at The Pacific Club in Newport Beach, Calif.
