DALLAS ?? The Guaranty Bank SMU Athletic Forum today announced the candidates for the 2006 Doak Walker Award, presented annually to the nation’s top collegiate running back. Included among the list of candidates is Alabama senior Kenneth Darby.
Darby, a native of Huntsville, opens his third season as the Tide’s starter at running back Saturday, September 2, when Alabama hosts Hawai’i in Bryant-Denny Stadium.
A first-team All-SEC selection by the coaches last year, Darby is looking to become the first Tide running back in school history to record three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. He owns 2,489 career rushing yards, good enough for seventh on the school’s all-time career rushing charts.
Darby needs just 253 yards to move into third place and is 1,077 yards shy of breaking Alabama’s all-time record held by Shaun Alexander (1996-99), who ran for 3,565 in his collegiate career.
The Guaranty Bank SMU Athletic Forum Board will select semifinalists for the award on November 15, with the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee voting to determine the finalists the following day. The Committee will vote to select a winner November 27.
The recipient of the 2006 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on ESPN on The Home Depot College Football Awards show December 7, 2006. The winner will also be honored at the Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet in Dallas February 15, 2007.
