Countdown to Kickoff
Alabama Football Team Continues to Prepare for Season-Opener

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ?? The Crimson Tide worked out Monday afternoon continued preseason practice Monday afternoon as threatening skies forced the team to move from the Thomas-Drew Practice Fields to the adjacent indoor facility.

Alabama took Sunday off and then returned to the normal practice day routine on Monday. Head coach Nick Saban and several players met with the media prior to practice, which will be the case each Monday throughout the season. Coach Saban’s quotes can be found on with quotes from John Parker Wilson and Wallace Gilberry listed below.

The team will return to practice Tuesday afternoon. Alabama opens the 2007 season Saturday, Sept. 1, against Western Carolina in Bryant-Denny Stadium. The game will be televised by the Crimson Tide Sports Network on a pay-per-view basis beginning at 6:07 p.m.

QB John Parker Wilson
(On whether he has any idea what type of play-caller Major Applewhite will be)
“No, not really. Just from what we’ve had scrimmages against can be the only indication but we’re going to go out there and run the plays that he calls and execute them to the best of our ability every play.”

(On if he’s excited about knowing there “a new product” out on the field this Saturday)
“I guess. We still have to go out there and play. It doesn’t matter if we have a new offense or anything. The other team doesn’t care about that. They’re trying to win just like we are. We’ve got to go out there and execute and play every play like it’s going to be the game.”

(On last win having come against Florida International)
“Last season is over with. We’re looking forward to this season. We think we’ve worked hard to get where we are right now. Now we’ve just got to go show it.”

(On running game, particularly Terry Grant)
“I think he’s solid. He’s worked hard. I think he’s earned everything that he’s been given. He’s a reliable guy. The guys depend on him which is very important.”

(On difference in himself at QB as opposed to this time last year, particularly the Hawaii game)
“I think now I know what to expect. Going (against) Hawaii last year, it’s kind of like a blur because I didn’t know what it was like to be a starter here. Now I do. Now I know how to get prepared for the game and know what game day is going to be like, know what all this is going to be like, how to handle all this, handle classes, handle studying and everything. I know what to expect now.”

(On whether it’s a mental growth rather than a physical growth)
“It really is because there’s a lot that goes on with doing this job. You really have to keep everything organized and keep everything in order to get stuff done.”

DE Wallace Gilberry
(on the opener and the excitement surrounding it)
“The excitement is at a steady pace right now, in a couple of days we will be hitting someone else. We are all about business, there is not too much room for error or child’s play. We are on a mission now, its business.”

(on the 3-4 defense)
“The 3-4 defense gives us more flexibility, we can do a lot more with additional linebackers and safeties on the field. As a defensive line we are trying to keep the offensive line from getting a free release up to the linebackers.”

(on his role as a starter)
“There are guys who are pushing me every day at practice, just because my name is at the top of the depth chart does not make me safe. I just want to keep getting better and not get complacent. Everyone is subjected to getting a lot of reps one day to getting few reps the next day.”

(on Western Carolina’s offense)
“Western Carolina is definitely a fast-paced team with two versatile quarterbacks. It is going to be an exciting ball game Saturday.”
