The University of Alabama football team broke camp today, holding its third and final scrimmage of the preseason at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

"With the scrimmage today it will pretty much conclude our training camp," said head coach Mike Shula.  "I thought it was a good scrimmage.  Again we got more plays than what we thought.  We had a little more two-minute work.  Overall I thought today was a good day.  There were still some miscues, but we put them in some different situations.  Offense was backed up to start with, and then we had the defense backed up later on in the scrimmage."

The team ran what was the equivalent of a halftime's worth of snaps for each side of the ball and as has been the case throughout the preseason the defense continued to impress.

"Defensively, I think our first team defense continued to look good as they have throughout camp, getting to the ball," Shula said.  "We talked last week about those guys getting to the ball quicker and getting offenses into second and third and long and really getting an advantage there.  That's going to be important for us all throughout the year and I thought they did a good job there."

Leading the way defensively was freshman Chris Keys, who turned in five tackles, including one tackle for a loss.  Several other players checked in with three tackles each, including senior linebacker DeMeco Ryans and junior strong safety Bryan Kilpatrick who each tallied a tackle behind the line of scrimmage.

Offensively, senior quarterback Brodie Croyle was 9-14 for 130 yards and two touchdowns.  His main target was sophomore Ezekial Knight who hauled in three passes for 53 yards.  Freshman tight end Nick Walker recorded the most receiving yards tallying 57 yards and a touchdown.

Junior Tim Castille led all rushers with 27 yards on only two carries.  Freshman Roy Upchurch had the lone rushing score of the day with a 10-yard scamper, while recording 24 yards on six carries.

Junior Tyrone Prothro reached the end zone three times, including two touchdowns and a two-point conversion.

Alabama begins classes on Wednesday, and the team will continue its workouts in preparation for the Tide's season opener on September 3 against the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders.
