The University of Alabama football team practiced for two hours in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts Wednesday afternoon, the first day of classes for the fall semester.

Coach Dennis Franchione was pleased with the workout and announced that 40 walk-ons had joined the team on the field with the start of a new semester.

"I thought we had a pretty good first day," Franchione said.  "With 40 new walk-ons, the first day of classes and still trying to recover from two-a-days, I was fairly pleased with the workout.  It was a warm and humid day and very taxing in many respects.

"With that, we were able to get some things accomplished and we started out preliminary work for the Middle Tennessee State game."

Alabama will return to the practice field Thursday at 3:45 p.m.  After Thursday, practices will be closed to the general public.
