TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -
The football team held its second scrimmage of fall practice on Saturday afternoon inside Bryant-Denny Stadium in a steady rain that also forced a 30 delay midway through the scrimmage due to lightning.
"Today we had an opportunity to play in the rain, which we might have to play a game in the rain," Alabama head coach Nick Saban said. "When that started to happen we lost a little bit of our intensity, and we lost a little bit of our enthusiasm."
"We handled the ball well and still were able to snap it and throw it, so I was pleased with that part of it. Even if we have to go in the locker room for 30 minutes and wait for the lightening to go away, we still have to play the game. That was really not what we ordered for the scrimmage, but there were some great lessons learned in terms of the situation we were in and how we responded to it."
The scrimmage lasted approximately 140 plays with the Crimson Tide's first unit turning in a strong out under less-than-perfect conditions. The scrimmage also gave Alabama a chance to get valuable experience to the newcomers.
"I was really pleased with the way the ones played in the scrimmage," Saban said. "From there on, we have a very young team and have a lot of work to do to try to improve some of these guys, so we develop the kind of depth we need to be successful."
AJ McCarron, who enters his second year as the starting quarterback, completed 12-of-23 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman T.J. Yeldon led the way on the ground with 60 yards and two touchdowns on a scrimmage-high 16 carries. He first found the end zone from 29 yards out and then plowed in from the two-yard line.
Redshirt Freshman Marvin Shinn posted a scrimmage-best 85 yards on two receptions with one touchdown. Kevin Norwood hauled in two scoring strikes and had 76 yards on three grabs. DeAndrew White also had a strong day with 63 yards receiving.
"I thought AJ (McCarron) handled himself well today, especially in those circumstances, and did a good job of taking care of the ball," Saban said. "T.J. (Yeldon) played very well today as a runner. Kevin Norwood also made some great plays and some big catches."
On the defensive side of the ball, junior C.J. Mosley led the way with six tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack while returning an interception for 34 yards and a score. Nico Johnson and Vinnie Sunseri also contributed with five tackles each while Damion Square and Xzavier Dickson both added four tackles, two tackles for loss and one sack.
The Crimson Tide will take Sunday and Monday off before returning to the practice field on Tuesday.
