The University of Alabama football team unveiled its product to the public for the first time this season, holding its first scrimmage of the season at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

The team started off slow according to head coach Mike Shula, but eventually got going on the right track.

"I think we got off to a slow start.  After we got going a little bit, we got into it; we saw some real good individual efforts.  Probably the biggest negative, there were some mental mistakes, guys getting lined up right; one time we had 10 guys on the field defensively, had some penalties, the ball was on the ground with the second group too much which we can't have."

However, Shula did say he feels the team is way ahead of where they have been in the first scrimmage the past two years.

"For the first scrimmage, when you think back to last year, the year before, we're light years ahead of that," said Shula.  "The offensive line started slow but they got better as we got along in the scrimmage.  Defensively I think all our returning starters all played pretty well."

Shula sang the praises of junior running Kenneth Darby, who finished the day with 40 yards on six carries, and of freshman running back Theo Townsend who posted 80 yards on six carries including a 67-yard run for a touchdown.

Senior quarterback Brodie Croyle led the offense completing 13 of 20 passes for 266 yards and five touchdowns.  Sophomore DJ Hall was the recipient of three passes, leading the offense with 107 yards and two touchdowns.  One of his receptions went for 68 yards, leading to his first score.

Sophomore linebacker Matt Collins led the defense with six tackles.  He also added a fumble recovery and a pass break-up.

Overall the defense recorded four sacks and four additional tackles for loss.

The Crimson Tide will continue with its preseason workouts on Tuesday with its second two-a-day session of the season.  The first workout is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. with the second practice beginning at 7:30 p.m.
