Countdown to Kickoff
Tide Completes First Scrimmage of Fall Practice

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama football coach Dennis Franchione took his team through a 97-play scrimmage Wednesday as Alabama prepared for its season-opening game with Middle Tennessee on Aug. 31.

"It went about like you would think," Franchione said, "the defense is ahead of the offense.  I thought the offense was a little out of sync and the timing was just not there.  I also thought we were not as physical as I would like and there were too many penalties."

The first 14 plays of the scrimmage were goal-line situations and featured the running of freshman fullback Greg McLain junior Shaud Williams who scored in two of the four series.

Williams was the leading rusher in the remainder of the scrimmage, gathering 60 yards on seven carries, while freshman Kenneth Darby had 46 yards on six carries.

"Offensively, we still have a lot of work to do, timing-wise," Franchione said following the scrimmage, "and that was evident out there this afternoon.

"Shaud (Williams) makes things happen when he has the ball in his hands and by design, we certainly tested McLain.  He is a big load in those goalline situations."

McLain scored the only rushing TD during the actual scrimmage, a five-yard sprint after Thurman Ward hauled in a 35-yard strike from Brodie Croyle.  For the day, McLain had four carries for 16 yards and the TD.

The passing touchdown came in the final minute of the scrimmage when Spencer Pennington threw a four-yard fade to Tarry Givens.

"As far as highlights, Thurman Ward made a nice catch; the first defense played well and I thought Bearden (Lane) had a solid day punting," said Franchione.  "A lot of what we did today was not reflected in the stats.  We are certainly further along at this time than we were last year."

Bearden averaged 48.3 yards on three punts, including a 65-yarder.
