The University of Alabama football team finished its first day of practice with the 105-man roster on Friday, but not without some changes.
Following the evening practice, Tide coach Dennis Franchione announced that fullback Donnie Lowe did not pass his physical and would have to forego his collegiate football career. His spot on the 105 roster can be filled, but Franchione said he has not decided who that would be.
"Donnie has suffered several injuries and his football career is over," Franchione said. "He will remain in school on a medical scholarship. As a result of Donnie's departure, we have moved Greg McLain from linebacker to fullback. We anticipated Donnie's situation in the spring and were not surprised. We are a little short at the true fullback position, but we have some who can help us at the W-back position."
Newcomer Ahmad Childress had a scare following practice when he was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center as a precaution following a heat related incident.
"Ahmad will fine," offered Franchione, "he was low on fluids and we sent him to the emergency room as a precautionary measure. It was a pretty tough practice, but we expect him to return Saturday."
The Tide will resume practice on Saturday with 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. sessions. There will be no practice on Sunday.
