TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -

The University of Alabama football team held its first scrimmage at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday afternoon, wrapping up its 11th practice of the preseason camp. In addition to the regular scrimmage, the practice featured 7-on-7 drills, third-down situations, red zone, goal-line and two-minute drills.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban was pleased with the effort given by the team, citing some big plays by the offensive unit. “I thought we had a good first scrimmage today,” Saban said afterward. “We made some really good plays out there today; we made some really big plays. Mike McCoy made two or three really big plays. He had some big catches. He caught the ball and ran with it and scored. Julio made a couple of big plays and scored.”

McCoy, a junior from Rankin, Miss., caught three passes for 119 yards and one touchdown for the Tide. Jones, a true freshman from Foley, Ala., added two catches for 59 yards and one touchdown.

Alabama senior quarterback John Parker, who graduated from the University earlier Saturday, completed 17-of-30 passes for 309 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Wilson attended graduation ceremonies at Coleman Coliseum with teammates Rashad Johnson and Drew Davis before reporting for the scrimmage.

“John Parker threw for 300 yards out there today,” Saban said. “On third (down), he made some big plays out there today. It’s a good thing that we are making big plays on offense.”

Defensively, Johnson, a senior defensive back from Sulligent, Ala., had a good day as well after receiving his degree with four tackles, two pass break-ups and an interception. Sophomore linebacker Charlie Higgenbotham, a native of Mountain Brook, Ala., led all tacklers with eight stops while sophomore linebacker Rolando McClain, a native of Decatur, Ala., added five tackles and an interception.

The Crimson Tide will take Sunday off (meetings only) and return to the practice field on Monday, Aug. 11 for its third two-a-day practice. The Tide will practice at 9:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Monday.

Alabama will open the 2008 season against the Clemson Tigers on Saturday, Aug. 30 in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The game will be televised nationally by ABC Sports beginning at 7 p.m. (CT).
