» Complete 105-Man Reporting Roster
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- The Alabama football newcomers went through their first practice in a Crimson Tide uniform outside in a rainstorm Monday afternoon, but came back and worked indoors for the evening practice.
"It was a good first day," said Tide coach Dennis Franchione late Monday night. "It was good to get them out and see them move around. I think they were a little more comfortable in practice two, it was not a good setting in the first practice."
The group of 25 newcomers went through orientation and conditioning tests on Monday and "18 of the 25 had a vertical jump of 30 inches or over," said Franchione. "That is usually a great indicator of athletic ability and speed. I'm pretty happy with that."
The Tide players will be off the field Tuesday, but return to an 8 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. practice on Wednesday. Veterans report to camp on Wednesday afternoon. There will be no practice on Thursday, while Friday will be the first day of combined two-a-day practices.
"We have a good looking group of defensive linemen," Franchione said. "Ahmad Childress is impressive with his agility and speed and he's lost some weight over the summer."
Franchione also talked about wide receiver Zach Fletcher, saying "right now, he would fit into our five or six top receivers. But remember, we're just the first day into practice."
