Alabama Lands 58 on SEC Freshmen Academic Honor Roll
July 16, 2009 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A combined 58 Alabama student-athletes representing 16 teams were named to the 2009 Southeastern Conference Freshmen Academic Honor Roll which was announced by SEC Commissioner Mike Slive on Thursday. The Crimson Tide ranked third among league institutions trailing only South Carolina (82) and Florida (69). Football topped all sports with 12 honorees followed by women's track with 10. Both softball and women's swimming added five to the list, while gymnastics and rowing each contributed four. Next up were men's golf and volleyball with three recipients each. Four teams including baseball, soccer, men's tennis and women's tennis each had a pair of freshmen honored. Rounding out the list was women's basketball, women's golf, men's swimming and men's track each with one. To earn a spot on the honor roll a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution, be on scholarship or a letter winner, have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution and have been a member of the varsity team for the sport's entire NCAA Championship segment. The 2009 SEC Freshmen Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2008-09 academic calendar.
