TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Former Alabama football greats Cornelius Bennett and Derrick Thomas were among 75 players named to the Sun Bowl Association's 75th Anniversary All-Sun Bowl Team Association President Joe E. Valenzuela announced on Tuesday.
The Crimson Tide has appeared in three Sun Bowl games with wins over No. 6 SMU in 1983, Washington in 1986 and Army in 1988. Alabama has appeared in an NCAA-best 55 bowl games with an NCAA-leading 31 wins.
Bennett played in the 1983 Sun Bowl against SMU and the 1986 Sun Bowl against Washington. Bennett notched seven tackles in an upset win over the Mustangs in 1983 and was named the Sun Bowl MVP in 1986 against the Huskies with 11 tackles and a sack. He was named a 2007 Legend of the Sun Bowl.
Thomas was on the 1986 Sun Bowl squad and then helped the 1988 team record a comeback win over Army. He made eight tackles and broke up a pass against the Huskies in 1986. Thomas was the named the 1988 Jimmy Rogers, Jr. Most Valuable Lineman with sixth tackles, two for loss, a pass breakup and two blocked field goals.
The Brut Sun Bowl is the nation's second oldest bowl game and has 75 different programs compete in the game, which is more than any other bowl game.
