Santonio Beard

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- Alabama football coach Dennis Franchione used spring practice No. 12 on Saturday for a 120-play scrimmage at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

"There was some good and bad," said Franchione, "we were pretty good at execution and there were not many penalties or turnovers.

"I thought the quarterbacks were inconsistent at times, but we put them in some situations that they might not be in during an actual game," he added.

The offense was led by Santonio Beard who had 74 yards, including a 51 yard TD scamper, on 10 carries and Ray Hudson who had 50 yards on nine carries.  His touchdown came on a two-yard run.

Quarterback Tyler Watts was 12 of 20 passing for 109 yards, while Brodie Croyle hit seven of 17 for 66 yards.

The leading receiver was junior Dre Fulgham who had three catches for 26 yards, while Galloway had two for 34 yards and senior Joel Babb two for 24 yards.  Senior tight end Theo Sanders also had two catches for 23 yards.

Although junior safety Charles Jones had seven tackles, one stop behind the line and one fumble recovery, the standout was sophomore tackle Gerard Clark who had three sacks for minus 25 yards and one pass breakup.  Linebacker Marvin Brown, safety Chris James and end Mark Anderson each had six tackles.

"Gerard Clark made some big plays and that shows some physical and mental toughness on his part," Fran said.  "I think he is coming around."

Franchione singled-out defenders Anthony Bryant, Antwan Odom, Kenny King and Freddie Roach and Santonio Beard, Shaud Williams, Ahmaad Galloway on offense.

"We're far enough along to get into game situations and that is something we could not do last year," Franchione added.  "I thought the players were enthusiastic and having fun out there today.   I am pleased with their work ethic and the way they played."

Although there were no interceptions thrown in the scrimmage, Franchione did say that several of the sacks "were coverage sacks.  The secondary did not give up the deep ball and that caused several of the sacks today."
