TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -The academic honors for Crimson Tide linebacker DeMeco Ryans continue to roll in as the senior from Bessemer was recently named an Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sports Scholar for 2005.  Ryans was the only football player from the SEC named to the first team.

Ryans, a three-time Academic All-SEC honoree, carries a 3.46 cumulative grade point average in Management and is scheduled to graduate in December, completing his graduation requirements in just seven semesters.

He was also chosen as the top student-athlete from the College of Commerce and Business Administration and was selected a Jason, an honorary group of the top male academic students on campus.

Black Issues in Higher Education established the Sports Scholars Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination.  In addition to their athletic ability, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must exhibit academic excellence and community involvement.

To be included, students must compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses or in their communities.

Ryans, who holds the Alabama single game tackle record with 25 against Arkansas in 2003, has 231 career tackles to rank 15th on the all-time tackle chart.  He was second on the tackle list in 2004 with 78 and needs just 69 tackles his senior season to become one of just five Tide players to collect 300 or more career tackles.
