TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama Crimson Tide scrimmaged for the second time this spring on a windy Friday afternoon in Bryant-Denny Stadium. UA went through approximately 150 plays including special teams work as well as situational drills, red area, goalline and two-minute.
"I think some of the defensive players (stood out)," said head coach Nick Saban. "Rolando McClain has had a really good spring. He's really embraced the leadership role that he has. He played very well today. I think he had the most tackles. He's done a really good job. The guys up front, I think, we've really done a good job improving our pass rush. Dont'a Hightower has had a good spring. We've used him in more roles. He's filling the gaps and all that and done a pretty good job."
The defense had several outstanding performances led by junior Butkus candidate Rolando McClain, who had a team-best eight tackles with 3.0 TFL and 2.5 sacks. Sophomore Marcell Dareus also had a good day with 5 tackles, 4.0 TFL and 2.5 sacks. Fellow sophomore Robby Green had five tackles, an interception, a tackle for loss and two pass break-ups from his safety position. Tyrone King returned an interception 24 yards for a touchdown and added two other pass break-ups and four tackles.
On offense, Darius Hanks had a solid performance as he led all receivers with eight catches for 69 yards. He was followed by Julio Jones (3-54 yards, 1 TD) and Preston Dial (3-25, 1 TD) in the receiving stats. Greg McElroy was the top passer, completing 12-of-26 passes for 128 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
"Offensively, (Darius) Hanks had like eight catches today," Saban said. "He's been a pretty steady performer all spring. I think Julio only had three, but had a big play in a critical situation. So I think we need to keep developing. I think we need to keep improving, relative to how we throw the ball. And it's not just the quarterback. The quarterback has probably done a really good job; it's pass-protection, it's running routes, it's timing, it's people getting away from man-to-man. We've got a lot of work to do in that area, and we've emphasized that this spring and we'll continue to emphasize it."
The Crimson Tide will return to the practice field Tuesday and Thursday afternoon next week before the spring concludes with A-Day at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 18th.
