Countdown to Kickoff
Crimson Tide Holds First Football Scrimmage of Spring Practice

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ?? The Alabama football team worked through its first scrimmage under new head coach Nick Saban Friday afternoon at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Friday’s scrimmage started with the Crimson Tide in game-like conditions with the first offense facing the second defense followed by the second offense going against the first defense. From there, the team went to a situational scrimmage, focusing on third-and-long situations, the two-minute drill and red zone offense.  The team also worked on special teams, focusing on both punts and kickoffs.

I am pleased with the progress we have made since we started, are we where we would like to be probably not but I am pleased with the progress we have made to this point,” Saban said.  There were some good things on both sides of the ball we just have to continue to build and show some more consistency.  We are really trying to develop timing with the people right now and get everyone used to doing what we need to do.”

Quarterback John Parker Wilson threw for 223 yards and a touchdown and receiver Matt Caddell caught four passes for 80 yards.  The running game was highlighted by Glen Coffee’s 81 yards on 15 carries for one touchdown.  Defensively, defensive lineman Brian Motley had 11 tackles, including three for losses.  Defensive back Rashad Johnson had eight tackles and end Wallace Gilberry made four tackles, including two for losses, one quarterback sack, one quarterback hurry and one forced fumble.

Friday’s scrimmage marked the first of three for Alabama this spring. The Crimson Tide will resume practices on Tuesday, April 10, before holding their second scrimmage on Saturday, April 14. The annual A-Day Spring Game is set for 1:05 p.m. on April 21 at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
