Tuscaloosa, Ala. - The Alabama Crimson Tide scrimmaged for the first time this spring Wednesday afternoon for two hours in Bryant-Denny Stadium. UA went through approximately 130 plays plus some special teams work in what was the seventh practice of the spring.
"Anytime you have a scrimmage it's a great time to evaluate players," said head coach Nick Saban. "In terms of can they go out and execute, play with intensity and do their job, play with the kind of toughness we are looking for, show that they have enough maturity to go out on their own without a coach standing behind them telling them what to do and pushing them to do it."
Junior quarterback Greg McElroy completed 22-of-33 passes for 214 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions to lead all passers. He connected with Colin Peek on scores of 15 and 4 yards, Mike McCoy from 21 yards, and Julio Jones on a 10-yard touchdown. Marquis Maze (3-59 yards), Jones (5-56 yards), McCoy (3-39 yards), Darius Hanks (6-34 yards) and Peek (7-33 yards) were the leading receivers.
Terry Grant led the ground game with 63 yards on 18 carries followed by Jeramie Griffin, who had 24 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown. Mark Ingram did not participate in the scrimmage as he was sidelined by a hamstring injury.
"We have some goals and objectives for what we like to work at and what we like to do," said Saban. "Today we wanted to make sure we ran the ball to kind of evaluate our ability to run block as well as play run defense. By the time we did 2-minute and third down, I think we got a lot of good work on the passing game."
All-SEC linebacker Roland McClain led the defense with 10 tackles, two interceptions and two sacks. Dont'a Hightower and Tyrone King were next with seven tackles apiece while King also had a pair of interceptions. Robby Green (6 tackles, 1 INT) and Lorenzo Washington (5 tackles, 2.5 sacks) also had a good day on the defensive side of the ball.
"I'm not disappointed where we are right now," said Saban. "We obviously have a lot of work to do. I don't think just work individually, but also collectively relative to the chemistry and relative to the vision of what this team wants to do."
The Crimson Tide will return to the practice field Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
