1998 JP-TV "Player of the Game" vs. Florida
1998 (Freshman): What a story! Andrew toiled behind starter John David Phillips in the first four games, but took over the starting duties against Ole Miss and never looked back. With that start, he became just the third freshman quarterback to start at Alabama since 1984. Coincidentally, he was the 13th different starting quarterback at Alabama in the last 15 years. For the season, Andrew completed 143 of 256 passes for 1,969 yards and 11 touchdowns. He threw seven interceptions. He ranks 36th in nationally in passing efficiency. As a starter, Zow has completed 129 of 225 passes (57.3 percent) for 1,776 yards and 11 TDs. He is averaging 253.7 yards a game passing as a starter. His 1,969 passing yards are the most in school history for a freshman and fell just 31 yards short of becoming only the 5th Alabama quarterback to throw for 2,000 yards in a season. Against Southern Miss, he turned in one of the finest days in school history when he led the Tide to a 30-20 win. Zow completed 26 of 35 passes for 361 yards and three TDs that day. The 26 completions is tied for the fourth-best single-game total in Bama history and his 361 passing yards rank sixth on the UA single-game list. Down 16-7 in the third quarter against LSU, Zow led the Tide to 15 fourth-quarter points and a 22-16 victory. In the second-half of that game, Andrew completed 12 of 15 passes (80%) for 239 yards and three TDs. His touchdown passes were 53, 21, and 25 yards. For the day in Baton Rouge, he was 17 of 27 for 284 yards and three TDs. His leadership and work was rewarded following spring practice when he was awarded the "Ozzie Newsome Most Improved Freshman" award.
Prep: The starting quarterback at Union County High, Andrew directed his team to consecutive state titles as a sophomore and junior, but had his senior campaign cut short by a torn ACL in his left knee. He had a 40-game win streak going at that time. As a junior, he threw for 1,000 yards and 16 TDs and rushed for nearly 1,000 more yards. He missed the first seven games of his senior season due to the knee injury.
Personal: The son of Betty Jones, Andrew says winning three state championships and a win streak of 40 games was his biggest high school athletic accomplishment. Born 8-3-78. He is in pre-major studies.
