The leading returning rusher in the SEC, Shaun comes back for a senior campaign he hopes will be of record setting proportions and one that could lead to becoming Alabama's first Heisman Trophy winner. He needs just 1,238 yards to become the Tide's all-time rusher. He received his first undergraduate degree in Marketing in the spring and returns this fall working on his second degree in Advertising. Shaun has been a prominent speaker at high schools and churches around the state. He was a preseason Football News All-SEC pick and was selected by The Sporting News as the nation's sixth- best running back.
1998 (Junior): A starter at tailback in every game, Shaun rushed for 1,178 yards and 13 touchdowns. He added another 385 yards on 26 receptions and four TDs. He set the school record for touchdowns in a game in the season opener against Brigham Young when he had five rushing TDs. Shaun went on to finish ranked in the following Alabana single-season categories: Total Offense - Touchdowns: tied 4th (17); Rushing Rushes: 2nd (258); Yards Gained: 4th (1,178) Scoring - Points: 3rd (102); Touchdowns: 2nd (17). He had a season-best 206 yards rushing and three TDs on 20 carries against Vanderbilt. Alexander closed the season rushing for over 100 yards in six games. His 13 rushing TDs led the SEC and he added another four receiving TDs on 26 receptions for 385 yards. He had five receptions for 110 yards and a TD against Mississippi State. Alexander scored three TDs in the season finale against Auburn, the third time he scored three or more TDs in a game during the season. In a loss to Mississippi State, Shaun had a career-best five receptions for 110 yards and one TD and added 60 yards rushing to finish with 170 all-purpose yards. Against Southern Miss, he had a career-high 36 carries for 141 yards and his 206 yards rushing against Vanderbilt was third-best in the SEC this season. He had 14 plays of 20 yards or more, seven of which were touchdowns.
1997 (Sophomore): Shaun missed two games (LSU and Mississippi State) due to injuries and finished the season with 415 yards and three TDs on 90 carries. He had another 37 yards on four receptions. His best game was the season opener against Houston when he had 96 yards and one TD on 11 carries. He had 66 yards in back-to-back games against Southern Miss and Kentucky and then had 65 yards on 13 carries in the season finale against Auburn.
1996 (Freshman): Exploded on the scene in the LSU game when he set a school record with 291 yards rushing on just 20 carries. He also tied a school record in that game when he scored four touchdowns. He played in 12 games and rushed 77 times for 589 yards and six TDs. Against LSU, he scored on runs of 17, 73, 72 and 12 yards en route to his record-setting night. He was named "SEC Offensive Player of the Week" following that game. Shaun came back the next week against Mississippi State and added 106 yards and one TD on 15 carries. For the season, he also had seven receptions for 53 yards.
1995: (Redshirted)
Prep: The Player of the Year as a senior in Kentucky, Shaun rushed for 3,166 yards and 54 touchdowns. He had 2,401 yards rushing and 42 TDs as a junior and amassed 6,657 yards (9th nationally) and 110 (5th nationally) touchdowns during his prep career. A Parade and USA Today All-America, Shaun was an honor student (3.5 GPA) and president of his senior class. He twice led Boone County High School to the Class 4A championship. Boone finished 14-1 his senior season. He played for coach Owen Hauck.
Personal: The son of Carol and Curtis Alexander, Shaun was president of his class from the 9th through the 12th grade. He credits his parents and brother, Durran, a Notre Dame graduate who played quint drums in the Irish's marching band, for providing leadership and guidance throughout his high school career. Born 8-30-77. He is pursuing a second undergraudate degree in Advertisting.
