4:01 p.m. -- Interception Seals Win for Crimson Team
An interception of Greg McElroy by defensive back Tyrone King with less than a minute to play has sealed the game for the Crimson team, 24-14. King is a junior transfer from Grambling State and a native of Birmingham.
For the Crimson team, the 10-point win means a steak dinner, while the White team will eat beans. The scrimmage's award winners, including the Dixie Howell Memorial Award (MVP) and the Dwight Stephenson Award (Most Valuable Lineman), will be announced immediately following the game.
3:51 p.m. -- Johnson Picks Up Where He Left Off
Safety Rashad Johnson seems to have picked up right where he left off in 2007, when he led Alabama in interceptions and was one of the SEC's top safeties. Johnson has picked off two passes today, one of Nick Fanuzzi, and one on a tip from John Parker Wilson. With 3:00 to play, the White team still trails by 10, 24-14.
3:40 p.m. -- Crimson Reclaims Lead With 75-yard Touchdown
Just minutes after the White team had cut the lead to 17-14, Crimson quarterback John Parker Wilson found tailback Terry Grant open in the right flat near his own 30-yard line, and Grant broke the play all the way to the end zone to extend the lead back to 10, at 24-14. The touchdown was the longest of the day for either team.
3:34 p.m. -- Darrah Connects Deep
On the first play of the fourth quarter, quarterback Thomas Darrah connected on a 44-yard touchdown pass with freshman Marquis Maze. Corey Smith's extra point cut the Crimson team's lead to 17-14. Darrah is a redshirt freshman quarterback from Newnan, Ga.
3:26 p.m. -- Same Faces, New Places
Converted tailback Jimmy Johns, now at linebacker, has seen time today at inside and outside linebacker with the first-team unit. On the last series, Johns shifted to the outside and was in coverage on a pass from Nick Fanuzzi.
Meanwhile, former fullback Baron Huber is now on defense, seeing time at linebacker on the Crimson team. Thomas Darrah is now in at quarterback.
Today's attendance is estimated at 78,200. The lower bowl of Bryant-Denny Stadium was completely filled during the first half, with the upper decks each at about half-capacity. The crowd, incidentally, was large enough to start the wave for the second consecutive year.
3:16 p.m. -- Teams Trade Turnovers to Open Second Half
After a turnover-free first half, the Crimson and White teams traded turnovers on the first two plays of the second half. First it was Nick Walker fumbling away a pass from quarterback Greg McElroy, which was recovered by defensive back Chris Rogers. Then, on the Crimson team's first play, tailback Jeramie Griffin fumbled the ball, which was recovered by defensive back Justin Woodall.
Some first half numbers:
Wilson -- 13-of-24 for 167 yards and two touchdowns
McElroy -- 6-of-13 for 127 yards and a touchdown
M. McCoy -- 4 catches for 68 yards
N. Walker -- 3 catches for 51 yards
D. Hanks -- 2 catches for 71 yards, 1 touchdown
The leading tacklers are linebacker Cory Reamer, with five, and Alfred McCullough, with six, including one sack.
3:01 p.m. -- Crimson Scores Late, Takes 10-point Halftime Lead
Taking over at its own 26-yard line and with just 1:08 to play in the half, the Crimson offense drove 74 yards in just 53 seconds behind the arm of quarterback John Parker Wilson. On three consecutive passes, Wilson spread the ball to three different positions, finding tight end Colin Peek for 25 yards, receiver Mike McCoy for 24 yards and tailback Terry Grant for a 15-yard score to extend the its lead to 17-7.
2:51 p.m. -- McCullough Making Plays
Defensive lineman Alfred McCullough has come up big the last three series for the Crimson defense. After breaking up a Greg McElroy pass at the line of scrimmage on one drive, McCullough came back on the next and stopped McElroy behind the line of scrimmage on third down. On the next set of downs, McCullough knocked down another McElroy pass at the line.
Meanwhile, Alabama head coach Nick Saban just absorbed a hit in the backfield but kept his feet on a hit from defensive lineman Brandon Fanney on a John Parker Wilson scramble. Saban has been observing the Alabama offense from behind the quarterbacks throughout the first half.
2:39 p.m. -- Crimson Takes the Lead
The Crimson team just took a 10-7 lead over the White team on a 6-yard pass from John Parker Wilson to Earl Alexander, which capped a nine-play, 69-yard drive. Also making catches on the drive were sophomore Mike McCoy and senior Jonathan Lowe, while Lowe and Terry Grant carried the ball out of the backfield.
2:28 p.m. -- End of the First Quarter
At the end of the first quarter, the White team leads the Crimson team 7-3 on a 28-yard pass from Greg McElroy to freshman Darius Hanks. A 44-yard field goal by Leigh Tiffin got the Crimson Team on the board. Also making plays in the quarter for the White team were Roy Upchurch and Nick Walker, while Javier Arenas had a pair of electrifying kickoff returns that were whistled dead, as well as a pass breakup in the end zone on a pass from John Parker Wilson to receiver Will Oakley.
The White team opened the second quarter with a 43-yard pass from McElroy to Hanks.
2:22 p.m. -- Crimson Team is on the Board
The Crimson team is on the board thanks to a 44-yard field goal from junior Leigh Tiffin. With 3:50 to go in the first quarter it's now 7-3 White.
2:15 p.m. -- Newcomer makes an impact
It didn't take long for freshman wide receiver Darius Hanks to make an impact -- on the white team's first drive of the game, sophomore quarterback Greg McElroy found Hanks open in the middle of the field for a 28-yard touchdown to give the white team the early 7-0 lead. The pass capped an 82-yard drive for the White team, which also featured a long run by tailback Roy Upchurch and a 29-yard pass from McElroy to tight end Nick Walker.
2:05 p.m. -- Captains and Coin Toss
Captains for the crimson team were seniors Antoine Caldwell and quarterback John Parker Wilson, while captains for the white team included seniors Jimmy Johns, Rashad Johnson and Zeke Knight. The crimson team won the toss and elected to receive, opening the scrimmage with the 1's against the 1's.
1:37 p.m. -- Will it fill?
With just under 30 minutes to go before kickoff, the lower bowl at Bryant-Denny Stadium is just about full with the crowd now starting to trickle into the east side upper deck. Too soon to tell if Alabama can repeat its attendance mark from last year at 92,138, but more than 80,000 is not out of the question.
On the field, Alabama's six quarterbacks are in their usual black no-contact jerseys and head coach Nick Saban is in his usual A-Day suit at the 50-yard line. The first-team offense and second-team defense are wearing crimson, while the first-team defense and the second-team offense are in white.
