TUSCALOOSA – Akini Adkins, a 6-foot-8, 210 pound redshirt freshman forward on the University of Alabama basketball team, has decided to withdraw from school at Alabama, citing a desire to transfer to another school in order to get more playing time.
“Obviously, we will help Akini as he has chosen to transfer because of playing time,” said Alabama head coach Mark Gottfried. “We will give him a release. He’s indicated that he has a couple of teams he’s looked into transferring to, and we’ll help make some calls or do what we can to help him.”
Adkins was a medical redshirt as a true freshman last season, playing in one game against Austin Peay. It was in that game Adkins injured his left thigh, causing a lengthy recovery time and resulting in the medical redshirt. This season he has played in four games, averaging 2.3 points and 2.8 rebounds. Originally from Cameroon, Adkins prepped at Tallahassee’s Leon High School where he averaged 23 points and 13 rebounds his senior season in 2003.
