Tuscaloosa, Ala.—Trailing by two points with 2:24 to play in the game, point guard Antoine Pettway hit back to back three pointers to give the Crimson Tide a lead it would not surrender as the Alabama men’s basketball team defeated the Charlotte 49ers 79-72. The victory improves the Tide to 3-2 for the season while Charlotte fell to 3-2.
After Alabama led most of the game, Pettway put the Tide on top by one with the first of his two three pointers. With Alabama clinging to the one point lead, Pettway sealed the game for Alabama, drilling another three with just 45 seconds remaining in the game, giving the Tide a 72-68 advantage. The senior point guard then put the game away, hitting four free throws over the final 10 seconds of the game.
Alabama head coach Mark Gottfried was pleased with Pettway’s clutch play.
“Pettway stepped up, I thought, and made some big plays and showed a lot of courage,” Gottfried said. “I’m one of these guys that believes that great people and people who do the right things and are good character people, usually they get the breaks and Antoine is that guy.”
Pettway finished the game with 13 points for Alabama.
Earnest Shelton once again had the hot hand for the Tide, scoring a game high 22 points. Also contributing for Alabama were Jermareo Davidson, who scored a career high 13 points, Chuck Davis, who picked up his second career double-double with 10 points and 10 boards and Kennedy Winston who added 13.
Charlotte was led by Brendan Plavich and Demon Brown who scored 17 points each and Curtis Withers who scored 10.
Alabama continues its home stand Saturday night as the Tide plays host to Austin Peay. Tip-off for the contest is set for 4 p.m. The game can be heard on the Crimson Tide Sports Network.
