Men's Basketball Closes Old Spice Classic Against No. 15 Michigan

The University of Alabama men's basketball team wraps up play in the 2009 Old Spice Classic on Sunday afternoon against No. 15 Michigan in the tournament's consolation game.

The Crimson Tide faces the Wolverines after falling to Florida State by a 60-51 margin in the semifinal game on Friday. In its opener, Alabama defeated Baylor, 79-76.

Michigan is also 1-1 in its two games in Orlando with an 83-76 overtime win against Creighton and a 79-65 loss to Marquette. The loss to Marquette was Michigan’s first of the season as it owns a 3-1 record this season. The Crimson Tide is 3-2 on the year. In the Old Spice Classic, Alabama has shot 44 percent from the field but face a five rebound per game deficit on the glass.

Alabama and Michigan have met twice, playing in the 1977-78 and 1978-79 seasons and splitting the meetings with Alabama winning the first game in Birmingham, Ala., and Michigan winning the return game in Ann Arbor, 99-84.

Including Michigan, the Tide’s last four opponents have a 17-4 cumulative record.

Sophomore JaMychal Green has led Alabama in both games in Orlando with 22 points in the win over Baylor and nine points in the loss to Florida State. For the tournament, he is averaging 15.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. Half of Green’s 14 rebounds have come off the offensive glass.

Senior Mikhail Torrance trails Green closely in scoring with 14.5 points per game this week and has converted on 55.6 percent of his attempts from the field. Torrance is also the team’s steadiest shooter on the line, converting on 88.9 percent of his attempts this season and 86.2 percent in his career. Junior Senario Hillman is the only other UA player averaging double-figures in Orlando with 11 points per game.

Michigan is led by standout Manny Harris who is averaging 21.3 points, 9.5 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game. DeShawn Sims is second on the team with 17.0 points per game and 8.3 rebounds. Harris has had two 20-point games in Orlando with 15 total assists while converting on 48.4 percent of his attempts.
