TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama men's basketball team returns to the hardwood on Sunday when it takes on West Alabama in the Tuscaloosa Regional of the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Wounded Warrior Project. The Crimson Tide and Tigers are set to tipoff at 4 p.m. CT at Coleman Coliseum.
Alabama is coming off a thrilling opener to its 100th season of men's basketball on Friday night. The Crimson Tide defeated South Dakota State, 70-67, on a three-pointer at the buzzer by sophomore Trevor Lacey to earn the win. With the victory, the Tide improved to 80-20 in season-opening contests and are now 21-3 in openers played at Coleman Coliseum.
Junior preseason first-team all-conference honoree Trevor Releford led Alabama with 18 points, while sophomore Rodney Cooper had 17 and Lacey finished with 15. The Crimson Tide reserves outscored South Dakota State's bench, 33-8, for the contest.
West Alabama will be playing its first game of the 2012-13 season when the Tigers invade Coleman Coliseum. UWA returns five letterwinners and three starters from last season's 8-20 team. Senior guard Steven Samuels led the squad a year ago in points (14.1), rebounds (6.4) and assists (4.4) per game.
The contest can be heard live on the Crimson Tide Sports Network, with Chris Stewart (play-by-play) and Bryan Passink (analyst) on the call.
