Tuscaloosa, Ala. -
The University of Alabama men’s basketball team hosts its final tune-up on Tuesday evening against visiting Augusta State at 7 p.m. The game is the second of two exhibitions for the Crimson Tide before it tips off the 2009-10 regular season on Saturday against Cornell at 1 p.m.
In the Tide’s first exhibition game it easily defeated Montevallo, 81-53, in first-year head coach Anthony Grant’s debut at Coleman Coliseum. Preseason all-SEC selection JaMychal Green led the Tide in the win with 18 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks while four others tallied double-figures in scoring. In just 23 minutes of action, senior point guard Mikhail Torrance had 12 points, six assists and two blocks. Torrance and Green are two of the Tide’s four returning starters from 2008-09.
Tuesday’s opponent, Augusta State, should provide an excellent test for Alabama as the Jaguars come to Coleman Coliseum ranked 10th in the NABC Division II preseason poll after posting a 30-5 record in 2008-09. Last season, the Jaguars advanced to the Final Four of the Division II Tournament after being a finalist in 2008. With three starters and six others returning, Augusta State was easily selected to repeat as the Peach Belt Conference Champions.
The Jaguars are led by All-American Ben Magden who averaged 18.8 points per game in 2008-09 to help ASU outscore its opponents by an average of 10 per game. In its previous exhibition, ASU defeated Aiken Tech, 84-53. Alex Smith, a transfer from William & Mary, was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field to lead all players with 18 points. Smith is one of three Jaguars on the roster with Division I experience.
