Gottfried's Trip to Kuwait Will Air on ESPN November 19

Mark Gottfried spent part of his summer vacation in Kuwait, coaching American Troops in August. His experience with the Pentagon’s “Operation Hardwood: Hoops With the Troops” will air in a special show on ESPN at 3 p.m. CT on Saturday, November 19.

Gottfried was instrumental in organizing the event, calling upon coaches and basketball friends to participate. The eight men, including Gottfried, spent a week that included traveling and coaching a three-day tournament at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait which is three hours south of Baghdad. The coaches also met with troops and held coaching clinics for Kuwaiti locals. Joining him were Oklahoma’s Kelvin Sampson, South Carolina’s Dave Odom, Michigan State’s Tom Izzo, Charlotte’s Bobby Lutz, former St. John’s coach Mike Jarvis and former Georgia Tech coach Bobby Cremins and ESPN’s Jay Bilas.
