Six NBA championship rings later, Robert Horry is still close to his home state’s roots. The Andalusia native and former University of Alabama basketball player is hosting the “First Annual Robert Horry Celebrity Golf Classic and Charity Event” August 26-29, 2005 at Birmingham’s Renaissance Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa.
All proceeds from the event benefit the RISE program in the Stallings Center in Tuscaloosa. Located on the University of Alabama’s campus, the RISE program serves infants, toddlers and preschoolers ages birth to six years in the West Alabama area that have known or suspected disabilities.
“In that I have a wonderful child who has disabilities, I felt this would be a great opportunity for others to share in my joy of giving to such an awesome foundation,” said Horry who helped lead the San Antonio Spurs to the 2005 NBA championship and has won NBA championships as a member of the LA Lakers and the Houston Rockets. At Alabama, he lettered four seasons and was an Academic All-Southeastern Conference players who helped Alabama advance to four straight NCAA tournament appearances, including the 1990 and 1991 Sweet 16 as well as SEC tournament championships in 1989, 1990 and 1991.
Horry’s NBA and basketball friends are gathering in Birmingham to help him raise money for the charity. Among those tentatively scheduled for the various events are some of his Spurs teammates and coaches, former Tide now Detroit Pistons star Antonio McDyess, Scottie Pippen, former Tide and Indiana Pacers forward Derrick McKey, former Tide and Miami Heat player turned assistant coach Keith Askins, former Tide and NBA player turned coach Sacramento Kings assistant T.R. Dunn, Ben Wallace, Chauncey Billups, Rick Fox and Nick VanExel among others.
The weekend begins on Friday, August 26 with the “Comedy Explosion” at the Stardome at 9:30 p.m. Tickets to see the comedians that night are $25. On Sunday, August 28 there will be a pairings Party with memorabilia and gifts auctioned off. And the golf tournament will be played on Monday, August 29th with a best ball scramble beginning at 12:30.
