University of Alabama basketball coach Mark Gottfried has been appointed to the John R. Wooden Award Board of Governors. He joins a board that includes a veritable “Who’s Who” of college basketball coaching. The Board is chaired by John R. Wooden, and Dean Smith is the Vice Chairman. The remaining board members include Jim Boeheim (Syracuse), Jim Calhoun (UConn), Mark Gottfried (Alabama), Tom Izzo (Michigan State), Gene Keady (Purdue), Ernie Kent (Oregon), Mike Krzyzewski (Duke), Lute Olson (Arizona), Kelvin Sampson (Oklahoma), Tubby Smith (Kentucky), and Roy Williams (North Carolina).

The John R. Wooden Award is the top individual honor in college basketball. It honors the player of the year as well as the All-American team.
