TUSCALOOSA ?? The University of Alabama will fete its 2005-06 men’s basketball team with its annual awards banquet on Tuesday, April 4. The banquet will be held at Sellers Auditorium in the Bryant Conference Center. Doors open at 6 p.m. CT and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. CT.

The event, co-sponsored by the Tuscaloosa Tip-Off Club and the University of Alabama’s TIDE PRIDE, is open to the public. Tickets are $20 per person. The deadline for ordering tickets is Thursday, March 30th. Persons wanting to purchase tickets should call the TIDE PRIDE office at (205) 348-6113.

“I hope we can have a tremendous crowd come and show their support because I am really proud of this team, who they are and what they accomplished,” said Alabama coach Mark Gottfried. “I’ve received so many emails, phone calls and comments in person from people about how much they appreciate this team and their effort and how they represented Alabama this season, and this event is a great way for our fans to show their support of these young men.”

Despite losing its John R. Wooden Player of the Year candidate and All-Southeastern Conference forward Chuck Davis to a season-ending knee injury in its SEC opener against Ole Miss in January and having only seven scholarship players remaining, Alabama’s team rallied and went on to advance to the second round of the 2006 NCAA tournament where it played Final Four team UCLA down to the wire (falling 62-59). Alabama finished second in the SEC’s Western Division, defeating Final Four teams LSU and Florida in home games along the way. Alabama finished its season with a 18-13 overall and 10-6 SEC record and produced All-SEC players in Ronald Steele and Jermareo Davidson and Freshman All-SEC award winners in Richard Hendrix and Alonzo Gee.
