Men's Basketball to Wrap Up Regular Season and Send Off Seniors Against Auburn
March 5, 2010 TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama men’s basketball team will wrap up the regular season and honor its three seniors before a sellout crowd Saturday afternoon against Auburn. The 141st installment of the in-state rivalry will tipoff at 12:47 p.m. in Coleman Coliseum with the broadcast being aired by SEC Network affiliates and ESPN360.com
Alabama Prior to the start of the contest, head coach Anthony Grant will join the capacity crowd in recognizing and honoring this year’s three seniors, Anthony Brock, Greg Cage and Mikhail Torrance, for their 11 combined years representing the Crimson Tide. At halftime, the University of Alabama will receive the ODK Sportsmanship Trophy, given annually to the winner of the Alabama-Auburn gridiron rivalry. Once the ball is tipped, the Crimson Tide will look to build off an impressive 79-70 road win at South Carolina on Wednesday and generate even more momentum heading into next week’s SEC Tournament. The Tide (15-14, 5-10 SEC) will have to defend its home court against an Auburn (15-15, 6-9 SEC) team led by senior guard DeWayne Reed’s 16.1 points per game. “They’re shooting the ball really well,” Grant said of Auburn. “They make about nine three pointers per game and are playing with great confidence and chemistry right now. They appear to be having fun and playing very well together.” Alabama’s leading scorer, Mikhail Torrance, will aim to continue his strong play in what may be the final home game of his career. The senior is averaging 19.8 points in the last four games and scored seven of his 17 points at South Carolina in the final minute to seal the victory against the Gamecocks. Revenge will also be on the mind of Torrance and the rest of the Tide after the squad suffered a heart-breaking 58-57 loss at Auburn earlier in the season. Alabama will try to replicate that defensive performance which held AU to its second-fewest points in SEC play. In addition to a series split with the Tigers, SEC Tournament seeding could be on the line as well as an Alabama win would give the Tide and Tigers identical 6-10 SEC records. The two teams are even through the first four tie-breakers with the eventual tie-breaker coming down to the better record against the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Division. With a Crimson Tide win, combined with a Georgia loss and a South Carolina win, the Tide would hold the tie-breaker and No. 4 seed in next week’s tournament. Television Broadcast Clearances
