BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama’s Trevor Releford has been named the Southeastern Conference Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Releford helped lead the Crimson Tide to a pair of wins last week to improve to an SEC best 7-1 in the league and 15-7 overall by averaging 14.5 points, 6.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals in the wins over Mississippi State and at Tennessee.
In the week’s opener against Mississippi State he scored 16 points and had a career-high eight assists and four steals. His assists led to 20 points while his steals turned into four points making the freshman account for 40 of UA’s 75 points. At Tennessee he shot 50 percent from the field again and made a pair of free throws in overtime to seal the Tide’s third SEC road win of the season. He also added a team-high four assists against the Volunteers.
The league honor is the second for the Kansas City, Mo., native as he earned the same award following the week of Dec. 13-19. He is averaging 9.9 points and 3.7 assists through the first 22 games of his freshman season and is second among SEC freshmen in assists.
