LAHAINA, Hawai'i - The Alabama Crimson Tide defeated the Chaminade Silverswords, 78-56, in the consolation round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational in men's basketball action Tuesday afternoon at the Lahaina Civic Center in downtown Lahaina on the island of Maui. The victory gave Alabama head coach Mark Gottfried his 200th win as head coach of the Crimson Tide, becoming the fourth coach in UA history to win 200 games at the Capstone.

For the second straight game, sophomore guard Senario Hillman scored a career-high with a game-high 22 points to lead the Tide while senior guard Alonzo Gee added 12 points and 7 rebounds. Darrell Birton led Chaminade with 16 points. With the win, Alabama improved to 2-2 on the season, while Chaminade dropped to 0-2. Alabama returns to action Wednesday at 1 p.m. Central Time (9 a.m. in Hawai'i) against St. Joseph's (2-2), an 80-54 winner over Indiana in the other consolation round game earlier on Tuesday. Wednesday's Alabama-St. Joseph's game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.


Gottfried Gets 200th Win at Alabama
The win over Chaminade was Alabama head coach Mark Gottfried's 200th victory at Alabama. Gottfried now has a 200-125 record in his 11th season with the Crimson Tide. With 200 wins at Alabama, Gottfried joined an exclusive club of 200 game winners at Alabama. Wimp Sanderson (267), Hank Crisp (264) and C.M. Newton (211) are the only other coaches in school history to reach the 200-win mark with the Tide.

Steele Nears 1,000 Points
Alabama senior point guard Ronald Steele is rapidly approaching the exclusive 1,000 point club. With 9 points against Chaminade in limited action, Steele enters the St. Joseph's game with 982 career points. Forty-one current or former members of the Crimson Tide have reached the milestone. Teammate Alonzo Gee eclipsed the mark last season and currently sits 36th on the all time UA scoring list. Head coach Mark Gottfried ranks 41st with 1,056 points.

Alabama-St. Joseph's Series
Wednesday's clash with St. Joseph's will be only the second meeting between the two schools. St. Joseph's defeated Alabama, 74-69, in the lone previous meeting in the 1996 NIT Semifinals at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Alabama has compiled a 22-9 record against the 14-team Atlantic 10 Conference field. The Crimson Tide has played at least one game against 13 of the 14 members, having never faced Fordham in basketball. Alabama a winning record against 10 of the 13 teams and a .500 or better record against 11 of the 13 teams. Only St. Joe's and St. Louis have winning records against Alabama. St. Louis has won all four games with Alabama in 1954, 1955, 1980 and 2000.

With the win over Chaminade, the Crimson Tide has posted a 9-2 record in its 11 games in the islands, winning the 1987 Hawai'i Pacific Thanksgiving Tournament Championship and the 1991 Rainbow Classic Championship. Alabama is making its fourth appearance in the state of Hawai'i as the Crimson Tide plays in the 25th annual EA Sports Maui Invitational on Maui.

Alabama in Regular Season Tournament Play
With the win, Alabama has compiled a 117-74 all-time record in regular season tournament play. The 2008 EA Sports Maui Invitational is the Crimson Tide's 86th in-season tournament, dating back to its first tournament experience at the 1947-48 All-College Tournament in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Crimson Tide's record only includes tournament play and not a one-game event. Alabama has won 29 tournament championships, including two under coach Mark Gottfried.

Gottfried's Teams In Tournament Play
With the win over Chaminade, Alabama head coach Mark Gottfried has compiled a 25-10 record in tournament play during his career at Murray State and Alabama. He is 20-8 at Alabama, leading the Crimson Tide to three championships in eight appearances. The 20 wins are third to Wimp Sanderson (31) and C.M. Newton (23) on the school's tournament win list. Gottfried has led the Crimson Tide to back-to-back tournament championships with wins at the 2006-07 Paradise Jam and the 2007-08 Las Vegas Classic. Gottfried was 5-2 (.714) in tournament play at Murray State.
