TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - - The Alabama men's basketball team opened its home slate with a 76-64 win over Texas Tech Thursday night in Coleman Coliseum. Senior guard Trevor Relefordled the Crimson Tide with 29 points on 11-of-14 shooting.
The contest was the inaugural game in the first season of the Big 12/SEC Challenge, as the SEC has now taken a 1-0 lead in this year's event. All 10 of the Big 12's teams and 10 of the SEC's 14 member institutions will participate in the annual event. Arkansas, Georgia, LSU and Tennessee will not play in the first year.
Alabama (1-1) and Texas Tech were tied at 20 with just over nine minutes remaining in the first half, but the Tide finished the half on a 20-8 run to take a 40-28 lead into the locker room. The Red Raiders never got within nine points in the second half, as UA cruised to its first victory of the year.
The Tide shot 54.9 percent (28-of-51) from the field for the game and connected on 42.9 percent from beyond the arc (6-of-14). Alabama was also efficient from the charity stripe, knocking down 14-of-17 foul shots (82.4 percent).
Sophomore guard Retin Obasohan had a career-high 15 points while tying his career-high in steals with five. He also led the team with four assists. Junior guard Levi Randolph had 10 points and three rebounds. Freshman forward Jimmie Taylorled the team with a career-high four blocks.
Texas Tech (2-1) was led by forwards Jaye Crockett and Jordan Tolbert who each had 14 points.
Releford passed Richard Hendrix for 20th on the school's all-time leading scoring list as he now has 1,340 points. He also went 5-of-7 from behind the three-point line. The five made three-pointers also tied a career-high, which he's done two other times.
Alabama returns to action next Monday night at 7 p.m. CT against Stillman in the first game in the NIT Season Tipoff. The game will be televised by ESPN3 and the radio broadcast will be carried on the Crimson Tide Sports Network.
