HEAD COACH Anthony Grant
Opening statement:
“We’re excited, obviously, to get that first win under our belt. North Florida came in with great energy and they fought really hard. At the beginning of the game we really had a tough time getting into the offensive flow. Thankfully our defense was able to make it difficult for them to score as well. In the second half and the end of the first half we finally found our rhythm and were able to get a little bit of a lead going into the half.”

On the reaction of defense in the first half when the offense was struggling:
“Well that was good to see and that’s what we’ve talked about in preseason. Obviously understanding our identity on the defensive end and I thought a lot of our guys did overcome some things that weren’t going well for us offensively. We had a difficult time really getting into our offense and then North Florida did a very good job of taking away some things that we were looking for within our offense. So I thought the defensive intensity we played with, in spite of not having success on the offensive end, was a good sign.”

On finally opening up after struggling in the first half:
“Once we settled down, I thought we were able to be efficient and show some patience. That’s the biggest thing, especially going into the first game you’re not really going to be in the rhythm that you want to be in. We’re trying out some different lineups and trying out some different combinations. I thought once we settled down and got into a little bit of a rhythm, it was good to see some of our young guys come in and get to see the ball go in the net and then understand what we were trying to do from an offensive standpoint.”

#1 JaMychal Green, Forward
On tonight’s win:
“We started off slow.  They were very aggressive and they did a good job defending us.  But, it is a 40-minute game and we stepped up to the plate and did what we needed to do to get the win.”

On improving the team’s defensive rebounding:
“We’ve got to block out and compete more on the defensive end.  But overall, I think we did a pretty good job.”

#5 Tony Mitchell, Forward
On what we can take from tonight’s game:
“We can take a lot from tonight’s game.  It has proven that we have a lot of stuff to work on.  We’ve just got to come out and get the job done and get wins.

On first half offensive lull:
“We were not running full speed and we were not running very hard.  That’s why we couldn’t get good shots.  But we picked it up throughout the game.  Our fans and our coaches do a good job getting us ready and keep us motivated.”

North Florida Quotes
HEAD COACH MATTHEW DRISCOLL

Opening Statement:
“We’re used to playing ranked teams every season. This isn’t new to us. We played Florida State and No. 4 Pittsburgh last year in back-to-back games. This is nothing new to us. We’ve played here in Tuscaloosa before. We came in here with a purpose and a plan. Just the one thing we didn’t expect to do was miss all those shots. I give Alabama a ton of credit because they’re one of the top defensive teams in the entire country and they showed that tonight. They showed it tonight in the way they guarded us and they didn’t allow us to get into any rhythm.

On his expectations for tonight:
“We came to win. We don’t try to be close, and we don’t try to learn from losing. We don’t believe in that philosophy. That’s why in our second season of existence we played for our league championship because of our game plan and purpose. We came here to win. Obviously, the first 10 minutes we showed our fortitude to play at their level. We just need to take it to another level. Sometimes we don’t understand how to do that, but we will eventually.

Goals for the next game against Savannah State:
“We’re looking to win the Atlantic Sun Championship. We’re going to play seven BCS schools this year. We always play tough teams like that in our non-conference schedule. We have 15 home games this season for the first time ever. We’re always going to compete. When you try to compete you always have a chance to win. I just didn’t expect us to make 22 percent of our shots tonight. However, we held them to four points in the first 10 minutes I believe. That’s how you win championships. You have to defend and rebound. We’ll get better and our guys know that.

#15 Jerron Granberry, Guard/Forward
On if the lack of scoring was due to Alabama’s defense:
“Both. You’ve got to give credit to Alabama. Last year they were ranked No. 5 in defense, but then again we didn’t make shots. That’s the bottom line. We had open shots and we missed open shots and we missed layups. That’s not characteristic of us.”

On how tough Alabama was as an opponent:
“They are tough. I mean, that’s an SEC team. They are a tough team. But it’s not about them, it’s about us. We didn’t come out there and play and it showed out there. They showed that if you don’t come out there and play every game you’re going to get your butt kicked.”

#21 Andy Diaz, Forward
On if the lack of scoring was due to Alabama’s defense:
“Like Jerron said it was a little bit of both. They are a great defensive team, don’t get me wrong. They are always in their rotations, always in their gaps. But we had a lot of open shots that we usually knock down and a lot of shots close to the basket that were ripped out. Just like Jerron said that wasn’t very characteristic of us and those shots will fall in other games.”

On how tough Alabama was as an opponent:
“They are a great defensive team. They made us work for everything we had. I think they are picked 19th in the country so obviously they are a great team.”
