Head Coach Anthony Grant

Opening statement:

“I’m really proud of our guys’ effort. Our guys were very excited to play. Obviously there was great energy in the building, and there was a lot of emotion, and I thought our emotion got the best of us in the first half. I didn’t feel like we were getting any rhythm. I thought we were being overly aggressive on the defensive end and allowed some easy baskets. They held us in the press. Something we talked about at halftime was just calming down. Just understand it’s a basketball game just like any other game and we have to do the things that allow us to have success. I thought we did that in the second half.

"I thought our defense was solid. We set it in, we started to guard, we got stops, we got some good effort, a lot of different guys on the defensive end, and we made enough plays from an offensive standpoint. I’m just proud of the guys for pulling one out.”

On the final ten minutes of the first half:

“I think we got hurt in the first half in transition. We had some breakdowns defensively and they got eight points on us: two threes, and a two in the press. Offensively, I just felt like we were out of rhythm. We did a great job of taking care of the basketball. Six turnovers for the game; I think we had three or four at the half. It was more of just guys trying to do a little bit too much from an offensive standpoint. I felt Levi’s shots in the first half were huge because we needed points- we needed turnovers. We needed success from an offensive standpoint in order to settle down. Overall, I think we did a great job all game. Nerlens Noel was phenomenal at protecting the rim, tremendous timing on his blocks, so I thought that our guys adjusted in the second half and were able to make some plays around the rim in the second half that we couldn’t in the first half.”

On the confidence of the players going into the second half:

“I’ve got to give our guys credit. I don’t think at any point they let that inside them and said ‘this is insurmountable.’ I think obviously the experiences that we’ve had over the course of the year and the understanding of what we need to do and the thing I’m most proud of is the things that we focused on at the half in terms of what we needed to do from the defensive standpoint. We went into half and they were shooting 49 percent from the field, and fifty percent from the three-point line. Obviously, they didn’t shoot a lot of threes but they made five of nine. But we talked about the need to do a better job defensively. They dominated the glass in the first half. I think we played them even in the second half on the backboard. So just the adjustments and the understanding of what we needed to do to win the game. Just proud of the effort and I told the guys that it’s one game. Hopefully we look at it and see what it is that we have to do to get better.”

#12 Trevor Releford, Guard

On what Alabama did differently in the second half:

“I think we just played to our ability and how Coach (Anthony Grant) wanted us to play, and we stopped letting them get easy drives. We just set out and played disciplined defense and it played in our favor.”

On the exciting atmosphere in the second half:

“I think that gives us an extra boost. When we hear the crowd behind us, I think that just fuels the guys and the team. We just wanted to get another steal and make another big play and just keep it going.”

#20 Levi Randolph, Guard

On what Alabama did differently in the second half:

“We just had to focus in and just lock in and do the things Coach (Anthony Grant) asked us to do. In the second half we tried to come out and focus and play defense.”

On the exciting atmosphere in the second half:

“I think it brings a lot of energy when plays start happening and the crowd gets into it. It’s like a sixth man; it’s noisy and kind of bothers the other team and gives us more energy. We feed off of it.”
