ALABAMA HEAD COACH Anthony Grant

Opening Statement:

“I’m really proud of our guys. I thought they came out with great energy and great purpose tonight. Our defense tonight was outstanding. There was great energy in the building. I think our student section set records tonight. It was loud and it was awesome. It gave our guys a big boost and this is a big win for our guys.”

On USC blocking 9 shots and Alabama still being able to get the ball to the rim:

“Well, we knew they were a great shot blocking team. Their defense creates turnovers and they rush you a little bit. I thought we rushed some. We missed a lot of things inside such as a lot of layups that they contested. The ones they didn’t block, they altered some of them, but we felt like we could go inside and get to the free-throw line. We did get to the free-throw line but didn’t shoot a great percentage, but it affected them a little bit in terms of being in foul trouble and playing as aggressive as they wanted to. ”

On outscoring USC in the paint:

“I think that’s been our M.O. here lately. We’ve done a really good job of getting the ball to the rim and finding ways to get the ball to the basket whether it be throwing it to the low post or driving the basket. I thought we did a great job tonight.”

On holding South Carolina to 47 points and limiting them to just 16 field goals on 56 tries for less than 29 percent:

“It was outstanding. It was a great effort by all of our guys and obviously you have to give South Carolina credit. They played extremely hard and some shots they normally make didn’t go in tonight. I thought our effort on the defensive end in terms of our guys locking in, scouting report-wise and playing tough, physical defense and doing the things that we needed to do - our guys did a really great job of that.”

On how much it altered the game for both teams to have Ellington and Releford on the bench for extended minutes in the first half:

“I think it certainly impacted it a lot. I felt like Ben Eblen came in and did a really good job. For them, Smith came in and really united them. He hasn’t been a guy that offensively gave them a whole lot this year but he came in the first half and gave them seven points and those were big points for them. I felt the subs came in and did a really good job in their absence.”

ALABAMA PLAYERS

#5 Tony Mitchell, Forward

On tonight’s performance:

“Team defense was the key tonight.  We came out and played good team defense.  We made a lot of stops and kept a lot of their stars from getting good looks.  So, we just came out and played great defense.”

On being 2-0 in SEC play:

“It’s big for us because it gives us confidence.  We’re finally starting to figure out how to win, but we still have more work to do.”

On things to work on:

“We just have to come in ready to play versus anybody.  Anybody can be beaten on any given day.  So, you just have to come in ready to play.”

#1 JaMychal Green, Forward

On starting 2-0 in SEC play:

“It feels good to be 2-0 in the league.  We have a lot of confidence on our end. I just want to give a shout out to our team as everyone did a great job tonight. We just battled, fought together, and played hard.”

On shutting down Sam Muldrow:

“He’s a long, athletic guy and we looked to block his shots.  So we tried our best to get him in foul trouble and just tried to defend him. We just knew he liked to go over his left shoulder.  So, I tried to take away his left shoulder.”

On improvements from this game:

“There’s always room for improvement.  We got to step up when their team presses us, got to fight through adversity.”

SOUTH CAROLINA PLAYERS

#5, Eric Smith, Guard

On his play:

“I just wanted to come in and do whatever I could to help the team. We practice hard every day so everything is fire. Anytime, whatever the team needs, I’m always ready.”

On shots not falling:

“It’s pretty tough with them not falling. It’s part of the game: some nights shots are falling and some nights they aren’t so you just have to play through it.”

#15, Malik Cooke, Forward

On the team’s mindset after early turnovers:

“It’s a long game, so we don’t really dwell on the past in a game. We just try to move forward. We always give ourselves a chance to get back in the game at the end, and I think we did that tonight we just fell a little short.”

On the effectiveness of Alabama’s defense:

“They kind of play similar to us; they want to get out there and create havoc with their hands. They got out there and did that tonight.”
