Head Coach Anthony Grant

Opening statement:

“I think in the second half the intensity we came out with and the passion that we showed is how we need to play the rest of the way. That’s the identity we need to have.  That’s the way we need to approach the rest of the season and that was my message to the team after the game.  I was frustrated and disappointed about the way we closed the half with the mental mistakes and the inability to finish and the breakdowns that we had, but we played the second half with passion.  We didn’t play a perfect half, we made mistakes, but we showed heart and passion for the way we need to play.  I told them I was very proud of that and happy to get the win along with it.”

On Trevor Releford and the entire team having the light-switch flip:

“We need for Releford to be aggressive offensively.  We need Lacy to be aggressive and make the game easier for the other guys out there on the floor.  In the first half we let our offensive struggles effect our defense and running the floor.  Then we had mental breakdowns.  We didn’t matchup in transition, made bad fouls, careless possessions and turnovers and it kept snowballing on us in the first half. It’s like we were saying ‘somebody feel sorry for me.’ Then in the second half we fought and at the end of the day that’s what I’m looking for.  I just ask them to work hard every day and that will transfer to what we do on the court.  Tonight in the second half is a good example.”

On Andrew Steele’s performance late:

“I thought that stretch there was incredible and Andrew spearheaded it with his intensity, energy, and communication on the court.  When he shows that heart his teammates are going to follow.  Releford was able to do that early in the second half getting to the rim and with his defensive intensity.  We need those guys to continue to step up and be the leaders of this team and we need the other guys to follow suit.”

#12 Trevor Releford, Guard

On the difference between first and second half production:

“I just took what the defense gave me, and I was able to hit some shots. You’ve got to give credit to my whole team and the pressure they were putting out there. They allowed me to get in transition and make easy buckets.”

On what got the transition game going in the second half:

“Coach’s message at halftime was to challenge us to go out and play to our ability, and to come out there with intensity and alertness. I think what we did on the defensive end allowed us to get out in transition and play to our ability.”

#22 Andrew Steele, Guard

On the role the press played in the last few minutes:

“I think it’s something we take pride in. It’s something we work on all year. We all talk about style of play and making teams uncomfortable. It’s something that we’re used to, and for us, I think we always need to turn our defense into offense. I think it started early with Trevor coming out of the first half and the energy he gave us. I think it kind of rubbed off on all of us and then you saw in the last couple minutes we were able to get some easy points from it.”

On how Alabama was able to finish the game today:

“I think we had a better sense of urgency in the second half. Trevor and I as leaders and being the veteran guys took it upon ourselves to lead our guys through these situations. We’ve seen this before. A lot of our team is young – they may not have seen these situations. We go out there and try to lead by example. They did a good job of following our lead.”
