Alabama Head Coach Anthony Grant

Opening statement:

“I thought this was a good win, and that we played really well in the second half. We were a little shorthanded, so that was a challenge for our team tonight. We wanted to be sure we were sharp and that we took care of the basketball. I think we lost our focus there in the first half, but we did a good job of picking up our intensity in the second half.”

On Andrew Steele getting back in the lineup:

“You could see the smile on Andrew’s face. He was really happy to be out there. It is hard to not play for as long as he has. He is still trying to get comfortable offensively. It was good to see him go out there contributing tonight.”

Thoughts on the non-conference part of the schedule:

“I think over the first 14 games we have figured things out as a coaching staff, and the guys have better understood what roles they need to fill. We are doing a much better job of handling the basketball. I think the progress we have shown through the first part of our schedule is what you want to see.”

On starting Southeastern Conference play later this week:

“When you start conference play, you can take everything you have done up to that point and throw it out the window. I think our first matchup (with Mississippi State) makes for a great game and a really exciting atmosphere.”

#24 Charvez Davis, Guard

On what he attributes to his hot shooting of late:

“I can say my focus. I’ve been really concentrating and trying to give our team energy. The guys did a good job finding me.”

On goals as a team heading into the game:

“For us as a team, we just wanted to maintain our focus, we wanted to execute, come out and play hard, play with energy and try to get better every time we step on the floor. That was our main focus tonight.”

On SEC opener against Mississippi State on Saturday:

“We have to come out with great energy. We have a lot of confidence coming into the game. I think we’ll be ready.”

#22 Andrew Steele, Guard

On returning to the court in over a year:

“It felt good. It seems like it’s been forever since the last time I played. The crowd reaction made me feel really good. It’s just nice getting back.”

On emotions about being able to play:

“I could not wait, I was excited. With everything that I’ve been through, and to get to this point, it’s finally over with.”

On strength and playing at game speed:

“I think I was pretty good. The trainers and medical staff did a good job making sure I was prepared to get on the floor. I felt good and I thought I had enough practice and preparation, it didn’t catch me off guard.”

#5 Tony Mitchell, Forward

On setting the tone of the game early:

“We just want to come out and force our will on our opponents. To come out and play hard, play good defense, and run our offense and execute.”

On playing without Trevor Releford and getting others minutes before entering SEC play:

“We’re used to Trevor since he’s been starting a lot this season as the point guard. It’s good because other guys can show what they can do at different positions. It was a good thing for us.”

Toledo Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk

“Alabama is a very talented and athletic team. We knew we were going to be outmanned tonight by playing with just four scholarship players and eight total. They are long and athletic and can attack you in a variety of ways which makes them tough to play against.”
