Dan Hipsher is in his third season at the University of Alabama on head coach Anthony Grant's staff, however, he is no stranger to either college basketball or Coach Grant. Hipsher brings 30 years of collegiate coaching experience to Alabama, 15 of those as a head coach at three different institutions. Additionally he recruited and coached Grant while serving as an assistant at Dayton and later offered Grant his first college coaching position at Stetson University.
In his second season at UA, he helped his former pupil turn a team with an early 5-5 record into one that amassed a 25-12 record and captured the 2011 Southeastern Conference Western Division title. That same squad made UA's first postseason appearance in four seasons and advanced to the NIT finals at New York City's Madison Square Garden. Along the way, his knowledge and basketball acumen helped turn the team into one of the toughest defensive units in the country while his eye for talent helped UA land a top-five recruiting class.
The veteran coach came to Alabama after spending two seasons as the associate head coach at the University of South Florida. Prior to joining the USF staff, Hipsher was an assistant coach at Arkansas following a nine-year stint as head coach at the University of Akron (1995-2004) where he was named the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year in 1998 after winning the MAC East Division Championship. Before rebuilding the Zips' program, he spent two seasons at Stetson, where Grant joined his staff for a season, and earned Trans-America Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors in 1995. Hipsher began his 15 years as a head coach with a four-year tenure at Wittenberg College where he posted a 97-18 record, three straight conference titles and three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. In his 15 seasons as a head coach, he amassed a 238-182 career record and earned conference Coach of the Year honors three times. In addition to his assistant coaching experiences at USF, Arkansas and Dayton, he also spent time on staffs at Miami (Ohio) and Miami-Dade Community College. Hipsher graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and biology. He was a two-time captain and academic All-American for the Falcons. Hipsher and his wife Sue are the parents of two sons, Andy and Bryan. Andy currently serves as the director of basketball operations at USF. Both played collegiately for their father. |
