TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - University of Alabama junior Brandon May has been named to the 2009 Brooks Wallace Award Watch List, the College Baseball Foundation and Hall of Fame announced Friday afternoon.

The Wallace Award has been presented annually since 2004 to the best college baseball player. The award is dedicated to the memory of former Texas Tech player and assistant coach Brooks Wallace. Wallace was a slick-fielding shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977 to 1980. A four-year starter, he was named All-Southwest Conference and All-District his senior year. He led the Red Raiders to their first-ever appearance in the Southwest Conference Tournament in 1980.

"Brandon May is certainly deserving of this recognition," Alabama head coach Jim Wells said. "He is an outstanding player.  He had a great year for us last year, hitting in the middle of the lineup, and we expect good things from him this season. He is also one of the leaders on this team."

A First-Team All-SEC selection in 2008 by the league's head coaches, May was second on the team with a .365 (92 for 252) average with nine home runs and 50 RBI in a team-high 63 games played.  He also led Alabama with 18 doubles.  In 30 SEC games, he batted .369 (45 for 122) with seven home runs and 18 RBI.

In 112 career games, May has compiled a .328 (131 for 400) batting average with nine home runs and 63 RBI. He enters the 2009 season with 87 consecutive starts, the longest active streak among Tide players.  During his two-year career, he has started nine post-season games and is hitting .306 (11 for 36) with one double, five RBI and seven runs scored.
