TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama baseball team wrapped up the fall with the 2013 "Battle for the Hammer competition. The "Battle for the Hammer" competition was a four-day event that tested each player's strength, speed, agility, endurance and mental toughness.
"The Battle for the Hammer is a series of events over four days where we're testing strength, conditioning, speed and endurance, while establishing a competitive edge for every kid and seeing how deep they can dig within themselves," UA head baseball coach Mitch Gaspard said. "Also, there is a team competition, so you're battling yourself individually and then you're battling the other teammates in the team events. Over the course of the week, we really wanted to see where each guy's competitive fire is during that time."
The competition included 20 total events, with 16 individual events and four team competitions. Players earned points based on how well they completed each event, which added to the team's overall score.
Captain Charley Sullivan selected a team that produced 12,410 total points and won the team title. Sullivan was also the individual winner, after collecting 1,600 points. Sullivan's team included Ben Moore, Spencer Turnbull, Jake Hubbard, Daniel Cucjen, Keaton Haack, Clayton Parker, Chance Vincent, Mike Oczypok and Taylor Poe.
The "Battle for the Hammer" began on Monday with strength and agility being tested in the weight room and on the football practice field. Day two saw continued action from the weight room, as each of the four teams completed additional strength and agility tests.
On Thursday, competition resumed at Sewell-Thomas Stadium, where the individual events included an obstacle course, a football throw, a bat speed test and a home run derby, with a tug-of-war team competition ending the day. The final day was spent in the swimming pool, culminating in a team relay race to wrap up the 20 events of the 2013 "Battle for the Hammer."
"When you look at a baseball season, it's a marathon and every day is different. With this competition, the scores would fluctuate from day to day, based on the strengths and weaknesses of each kid. During this week you really find out that it's about the team and pulling together to reach the goals you want to achieve."
The squad was divided into four teams with Sullivan, senior catcher Brett Booth, senior infielder Kenny Roberts and senior outfielder Andrew Miller serving as team captains.
