TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama baseball team will begin its fall workouts on Thursday, Sept. 22, and the Crimson Tide will have team scrimmages on Thursday and Friday this week. During the six weeks of the fall practice schedule, the Tide will have 27 practice days that will include approximately 18 intrasquad opportunities.

Fans are invited to visit “The Joe” to get an early look at the 2012 Crimson Tide baseball team for fall scrimmages. Admission will be free to all fans attending the intrasquads. Both scrimmages this week are open to the public with batting practice starting at 2 p.m., and first pitch is set for approximately 3 p.m., on Thursday and Friday.

“The fall for me is a about team chemistry and learning how to work at the pace we want to work,” said head baseball coach Mitch Gaspard. “Understanding what it takes to compete every day on the field, in the weight room and in the classroom is extremely important. It’s important that we have some really good leaders back on our team. This is always an exciting time for the guys coming in, and for the coaching staff, it’s seeing where the team is at. As a coaching staff we have to do a good job of setting the right mindset in our players as we head into a new season.”

Thursday’s scrimmage will be the first of 27 practices with approximately 18 scrimmages for the Tide this fall. The final day of the fall season will be Friday, Nov. 4, with the final team scrimmage. The following day, the UA baseball team will sign autographs in the quad prior to the kickoff of the Alabama versus LSU football game on Nov. 5

The Tide, led by the return of All-American and Gold Glove outfielder Taylor Dugas, welcome back 23 letterwinners, including six position starters and nine pitchers, from last season’s NCAA Regional team that posted a 35-28 overall record.

UA welcomes 17 newcomers and four redshirts to the roster for the 2012 season, which includes three players, Ian Gardeck, Justin Kamplain and Taylor Guilbeau, whom were 2011 MLB Draft selections. The Crimson Tide added nine position players and eight pitchers to the roster for the upcoming season.

“We’re real excited and looking forward to seeing the guys that will emerge this fall,” said Gaspard.  “It’s evident already that we have some new pieces that will really help us grow as a program. We lost a bulk of our innings pitched, so putting together a pitching staff will be one of the biggest challenges moving forward. We have a lot of unproven guys, but some very talented players on the mound. There are a lot of jobs to be won and it starts in the fall.”

Head coach Mitch Gaspard enters his third season leading the Alabama baseball program. In his first two years, Gaspard has a 77-50 (.606) record, while leading the Tide to back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances. He also guided UA to a Super Regional finish in 2010.
