TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Former Alabama pitcher Jimmy Nelson (2008-10) will highlight the Pacific Coast League All-Star team at the 2014 Triple-A All-Star Game in Durham, N.C. on July 16. This marks Nelson's second appearance in as many seasons in the Triple-A mid-season game.
Nelson has been arguably the best pitcher in Triple-A ball this season. The Nashville right-hander leads the circuit in ERA (1.56), strikeouts (110) and average-against (.176) and ranks second in strikeouts per nine innings pitched (9.5) and WHIP (0.92). The top prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers organization, Nelson is listed as one of the top-100 prospected in baseball according to MLB.com.
Nelson has made 16 appearances, including 15 starts, for the Nashville Sounds this season, posting a 10-2 record in 104.0 innings. Nelson also made one start in the big leagues in 2014, when he went 5.2 scoreless innings in a win over the Miami Marlins on May 25. Nelson allowed five hits and three walks while striking out six in his fifth career Major League appearance. He appeared in four games as a late season call-up by the Brewers in 2013.
In his three seasons with the Crimson Tide, Nelson appeared in 58 games with 24 as a starter. He posted a 14-9 career record with a 4.61 ERA in 189.1 innings in Tuscaloosa. As a junior in 2010, Nelson helped the Tide advance to the NCAA Super Regionals, after posting a 9-3 record with a 4.01 ERA in 110.0 innings pitched and three complete games.
