TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama freshmen, shortstop Mikey White (Birmingham, Ala.) and relief pitcher Ray Castillo (Seale, Ala.) were selected as 2013 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-Americans, as announced by Collegiate Baseball News today.
Mikey White started all 63 games at shortstop for the Crimson Tide and finished the year with a .287 batting average, with 34 runs, 11 doubles, a triple, two home runs and 30 RBI. He was outstanding at the plate during SEC play, hitting a team-best .350 to rank eighth in the league during conference games. White garnered second team All-Southeastern Conference honors, as well.
White was also stellar on the defensive side, helping the Tide rank second in the country in double plays, contributing on 55 of Alabama’s SEC-leading 80 double plays. White had 209 assists to finish the year with the second most assists in a single season in school history
Ray Castillo, who was a SEC All-Freshman Team selection, finished his first season with 12 saves to set an Alabama freshman single season record. The 12 saves tied for the third most in a single season at Alabama and rank ninth in the career record books. Castillo finished the season with a team-high 26 appearances, where he posted a 2-3 record with a 3.38 ERA. He recorded 43 strikeouts in 42.2 innings pitched and closed out two of Alabama’s three shutouts in 2013.
